The drum kit is rarely considered for the melodic quality of the instrument. Yet drums and cymbals sing out!

Listening to a drum kit on its own is so exceptionally rare that for the first edition of the “Percussionist” CD by In situ in 1996 it was thought necessary to add the comment on the cover, “No added special effects.”

So now you know. During the concert filmed at the Théatre du Samovar in 2004, Frédéric Firmin presented a new perception of percussion music with a singular appreciation of musical action.

In this film where the cameras gave a view that was denied to the spectators present in the concert hall, Frédéric Firmin revealed the art of the percussionist, ever the poet and improviser, but always a master of the space of dance and a painter in sound.

During the first part of the Samovar concert Frédéric Firmin literally stripped his drum kit down, then at the end of the show, he went all round it... In real terms, to show us that his studies can still open up new paths.

Frédéric, a man from the West Indies, pays tribute to the rhythms of his culture. But he takes us well beyond beat and ostinato. His bass drum produces a variety of notes. His cymbals sing like a choir, giving out airy harmonics in counterpoint.

This drumming is the heartbeat of the earth and the music of the spheres.
