Terrificante. " A rigourous and precise teaching, with no overdone folklore, respectful of the music and its masters, finally impregnated with tradition." Alain Bouchaux • PERCUSSIONS MAGAZINE (French magazine - # 5 new series - April 2001) " This video is a remarkable tool towards the knowledge of Tabla, its natural environment, and, even more so, learning to play the instrument. " The booklet filled me with enthusiasm. It quotes the introductory documentary, offers a very reasonable history of Tabla, describes the drums, shows photos with the different strokes (essential !), explains the theka counting technique and carries the scores of the lessons and practise patterns described in the tutorial video; a map of the priciple gharana Tabla music schools and a glossary complete the package. The make-up is attractive, well corrected. It turns out to be an essential tool, especially for Music Schools. Bravo to the team who put this method together." Michel Faliguand • LE MAGAZINE DE LA LIBRAIRIE MUSICALE (French magazine - #4 April / May / June 2000) " More than just technical lessons for Tabla playing, this video gives a chance to see the methods used by Indian masters with their students and mesure the difference with Occidental ways of teaching. Chances are you will never work at your instrument as you did before watching this tape. " Jérôme Gotte
• BATTEUR MAGAZINE (French magazine - Special edition : Djembe Generation July / August 1998) " A thorough information and work tool for the beginner up to the most advanced percussionist. Bravo !" "Inza Diabate begins each rythmic lesson with, for every one (6, plus some calling patterns and doudou accompaniments), information on the geographical and socio-cultural background of the musical pieces. Professor Diabate is totally straightfoward. In other words : observe, listen, reproduce and make the rythmes he teaches you swing to the max !" • OSCAR MUSIC (French magazine - BUYERS GUIDE ) "A superb video, half documentary, half tutorial... A success."
• The Tombak Ostad Madjid Khaladj This is yet another excellent work by Ostad Madjid Khaladj. It contains 2 DVDs and a Booklet. In first DVD Ostad Khaladj introduces Tombak and basic and advance techniques and gives step by step lesson in 6/8 suite composed by Ostad Hosain Tehrani father of modern Tombak. If you are a beginner, you can use these lessons to learn how to play tombak and if you already play Tombak, you can use these lessons to improve your techniques or if you are a fan of Ostad Khaladj like me, you can watch a master player playing this suite with perfection and become totally intoxicated. Second DVD contains a documentary showing Iranian master craftsman making a Tombak to Ostad Khaladj's specification and Ostad Khaladj shows you how to select and skin Tombak. This DVD also contains a solo concert by Ostad Khaladj Titled "Invitaion au voyage". In this concert Ostad Khaladj plays Tombak, zang-e-sarangoshti, Dayre and Daf. In this concert you can enjoy an excellent artistic work by a master musician and learn about these heavenly Iranian instruments. The booklet contains information about Tombak and it's origin and information about Ostad Hosain Tehrani and also contains information about instruments used is the concert contained in the second DVD and all the notes for the lessons in first DVD. We highly recommend this package. It is a must for anybody interested in Tombak or Persian Music. We would like to thank Mr. Philippe Nasse of Le Salon de Musique, Improductions for sending us this superb work. Hormoz Dilmaghani - Juin 2005 http://www.tombak.co.uk • The Tombak - Songlines N° 31 July/ august 2005 - Now you can play the Persian goblet drum! This is the fourth percussion documentary-instruction DVD from Philippe Nasse and his team (following samba, djembe and tabla) and it is the right up there with the best others efforts in the series. There is only one thing it does'nt have- the artistry of accompanying is not really covered, so the instrument's contribution to a wider musical setting is almost skipped over... Then, again, you'd be unlikely to be checking out this product if you weren¹t already familiar with the tombak (goblet drum). The Tombak is the chief percussion instrument of Persian classical music it is a perilously difficult instrument to master, capable of all the complexity of the tabla and is the strongest surviving member of an historically larger family of Persian instruments. Khaladj is the perfect teacher - clear, patient and precise, the two hours of carefully graded instruction he gives will keep you busy for a lifetime. And the second DVD has a documentary about the construction of the instrument, plus a solo recital by Khaladj of great range (and featuring others instruments). The booklet is full of information a student or inquisitive type might actually want : transcriptions, interviews and pictures. You have to admire the quality of this package - it's the exact opposite end of the spectrum from ³ you can play guitar with these three chords ' publications. It seems Nasse is making traditions of teaching traditions - as deeply as possible without actually sitting at the master's feet.

Tutti i colpi fondamentali e i principali abbellimenti vengono illustrati in sequenza.
Antonio Gentile • RIM SHOT (French magazine - January 2002) " Revelation upon revelation : with these videos, the specialists and aficionados will be totally satisfied, as will the beginners and newcomers. Each and everyone will find there sare, so vast is the of information, clear and logical the presentation and constant the effort to remain understandable to all. " • SONGLINES The world music magazine november/december 2002 " Full marks. " In the hearts of rios Baterias improductions An exemplary intyroduction to Brazilian samba, complete with book and percussion lessons. So much work has been put in this samba DVD (wich also available on VHS) that it immediately becomes the ultimate introduction and most comprehensive reference work on the subject. But what is it ? Well, its a 70 minute documentatry on the baterias (parading percussion blocs) that provide the rhythms of the samba schools of Rio de Janeiro, followed by 85 minutes of detailled instruction on how to play the relevant percussion instruments. The accompagnying 70-page booklet provides information on history and notation, plus contacts; a discography and more. The documentary conveys the majesty of carnival - a positive affirmation of life and the greatyest show on the earth - the sensuality and freedom of samba, the stunning views of Rio, yet the approach never gets over-romantic. there's as much sweat as sequins, and the practical, down-to-the earth stuff is all covered. How do groups of 300 percussionists support the thousands of costumed dancers in each samba school's contribution to the five day parade ? What are the social organisations that allow this to happen , how are they funded, who wins and loses ? Footage and preparation and performance from famous premier-meague groups Mangueira, Imperatriz, Viradouro and Portela suck you into samba's spawning grounds. And you could not be untouches by some of the personal stories. Jean-Christophe Jacquin's tutorial in samba is concise and highly detailled - finally, an experienced professional teacher/performer presents the true depth on the subject with clarity and structure, tailored to the needs of the non-Brazilian student. Essential advice is abundant, many pitfalls are discussed and careful guidance steers you logically through the multitude of techniques, phrases and musical nuances. This builds on the cultural context provided earlier, and wrole set could serve a model of style, quality and well-directed instruction. " Full marks. " Barak Schmool.
• Ali Alaoui -The Darabuka Songlines - DVD and Word cinema Get yourself a pair of capable hands. This is now the fifth high-quality percussion documentary / instruction DVD release from French director Philippe Nasse. The fascinating rhythms of a large part of the Arab world are demonstrated by the capable hands and patient manner of Moroccan master percussionist Ali Alaoui, who takes us on a tour of the darbuka’s beginnings in Morocco. We get to see the instrument played in a wide variety of settings – with the Gnawa musicians, in classical Arab orchestras, in popular music and with the Muslim brotherhoods parading in the streets. Such a well-thought-out presentation prepares you perfectly for the clear and essential teaching of extensive techniques on the instrument, as well as on the riqq (tambourine) and bendir (large frame drum). The camera work is perfect, allowing the student to see from the players viewpoint – and when it comes to some tricky Moroccan ensemble pieces, cunning split screen effects and some good mixing allows you to track each element of the polyrhythms without any confusion. The booklet actually contains far more information than the DVD so, whilst it does not actually contextualise the use of each rhythm, the adaptations for drumset and will inevitably inspire you in one way or another. Everyone interested in the darbuka should get this DVD – as a percussion teacher I have rarely seen such a complete instructional tool.
