André Ceccarelli • "Louis César Ewandé evokes the world of traditional Mandingo music on the disk, together with a remarkable orchestral dimension that enhances the lyricism of this music." Ray Lema • Much more than just percussion, the "Percussion Ensemble" disk is total music. Jean-Philippe Rykiel In the middle of the eighties, the “Percussion Ensemble” orchestra, conducted by Louis César Ewandé, opened up the possibility of exchanges between different percussive cultures outside the commercial productions of world music. Percussion Ensemble offers a respectful blend of musical character, judicially enhanced by meticulous recording and scenic staging that favours both improvisation and sophisticated arrangements. Going beyond mere respect for musical sources, the identity of each member of the group makes for a subtle experimentation between tradition and modernity. It is all in the balance of a repertoire embracing traditional pieces and original compositions which creates a subtle harmony between the tones and concepts from contemporary western music and the deep roots embedded in the Mandingo music of West Africa and Cuban music. Twenty years on and the new publication of the Percussion Ensemble disc is the occasion for offering you a hitherto unavailable chance of listening to the group. This video, made during a concert at the “Mille Jazz Club du Bourget” in the autumn of 1987, was filmed at the initiative of the group’s producer at that time, Pascal Fonteneau (Art Public Image). It is also to the “Centre Educatif et Culturel du Bourget” that we owe this happening and thanks to the dynamic team who had the courage to risk staging an ambitious musical event in the heart of the Paris suburb of Seine-Saint-Denis. This video is also a souvenir of the early days of IMPRODUCTIONS that has since devoted a large part of its activities to the production of teaching DVDs and documentaries about the world’s percussive instruments. “Percussion Ensemble” is still active; some of the musicians are new but the spirit lives on… an open gesture and a keen ear.
