> USING THE "LE SALON DE MUSIQUE" COLLECTION DVDS

Technical questions concerning DVD :

>
Why is DVD better than VHS ?
DVD technology allows us to present you our documentaries and tutorials with a large interactivity offering :
Multiple choice for language and subtitles.
Viewing of specific tutorial sequences with a simple click.
Looping of the parts you are practicing.
All this with a far better quality of picture and sound than a VHS will ever achieve.
Nonetheless, we still publish VHS versions !

>
Are the « Le Salon de Musique » DVDs zoned and therefore limited to specific geographic zones ?
Our DVDs are not zoned and can be played in any country, without any restriction of zone.

>
What is the video standard of the DVDs from the collection of «Le Salon de Musique » ?
All our DVDs are published in PAL video standard, to supply the largest amount of countries.
For the United States and Japan we are progressively issuing NTSC versions.

>
Which DVDs are available in NTSC ?
For the moment only the Tabla and the Samba tutorial DVDs are available in NTSC.

>
What is the difference between PAL and NTSC DVD ?
A DVD is encoded in one of two color coding standards. PAL, in most countries (Europe) or NTSC in the US and Japan. These codes have an effect on the colors and the picture rate of the video (PAL : 25 pictures/second – NTSC : 30 p/s) .
Your video equipment must be compatible with these standards.
If not, use the DVD player on your computer.

>
What specificities concerning my DVD player and television ?
A vast majority of DVD players can read both PAL and NTSC coded programs.
Make sure it is the case with your equipment (Pal for a PAL DVD / NTSC for a NTSC DVD).
If the standard is not compatible, or if your televison is not adapted or is progammed in SECAM (France), the picture will appear in black and white.
In any case, it is recommended to have multi-standard (PAL/NTSC) equipment.

>
Can I play this DVD on my personal computer ?
Yes. If you do not have access to a home DVD player and a PAL compatible television set, it is possible to play the DVD on a personal computer.
To use the interactivity, a DVD remote control must be installed in the computer.

>
My DVD suddenly stops playing… Why ?
A DVD is relatively fragile and the fact that there are so many different DVD players on the market can sometimes be a problem. It may occure that the player stops at random or even refuses to start reading.
Don’t forget, the total number of DVD players is great and quality varies… Today, most DVD rentals and DVD shops are equiped with special testing machines so the quality of the DVD can be garanteed … but only so far as on their own DVD players !!At « Le Salon de Musique » we check every aspect during the pre-mastering phase and proceed with all the necessary care and attention in the manufacturing of our products.
Every once in a while we have received complaints concerning faulty DVDs that work perfectly on our DVD players. In this case, we cannot be considered responsible for the problems that the client encounters and therefore cannot replace the DVD by a new one.DVDs are relatively fragile… and don’t like dust !
If the DVD skips at random, like an audio CD, try cleaning it with a cloth. Mind you don’t leave any fingerprints or scratch the disk.
> How to clean a DVD ?
- In order to correctly clean a DVD, use a soft, clean cloth, rubbing from the center to the edge. Never rub in circles !- Special DVDs that clean the cell of the DVD player can be found in many stores. This might do the trick.

>
How are your DVDs manufactured ?
All our DVDs are mass-produced and pressed in professional laboratories using clean chambers (free of dust)

>
What to do if it still doesn’t work ?
Test the DVD on another DVD player.

>
How to loop a sequence ?
Simply click on the arrow shaped button on the left of the sequence title and the section will be looped indefinately.
To stop the loop press the menu button on your remote control.

> QUESTIONS CONCERNING THE PRODUCTION

>
What is the editorial line of the collection ?
It is important for « Le Salon de Musique » to renew, with audiovisual techniques, the quality of oral transmission that favours a direct relationship, connecting musical expression to the body (« from the movement to the ear, from the ear to the movement »).
If DVDs allow an individualisation of the tutorials, the fact of seeing and hearing how the sounds are created and organized (as many times as necessary), the transcriptions remain a useful tool for a better understanding of the forms and structures.
This is why, even though most of the music presented in this collection is of oral tradition, it seemed helpful to write down the sequences using, according to the situation, classical notation or onomatopeas.

>
Do you have other projects ?
Yes, we are currently working on the production of a new DVD tutorial about the Derbouka (Moroccan drum) with Ali Alaoui. The shooting will begin mid-April, in Fes (Morocco).
Release early 2006.

>
Does « Le Salon de Musique » organize classes and musical workshops ?
No, but if you sign-up for our free newsletter you will recieve information about the workshops, classes and concerts proposed by the musicians that make our collection, together with our other partners.
The LINK page contains useful links to many interesting friends and partners…

>
Do you sell instruments ?
No, to each man his trade…
But, the LINK page will help you find what you are looking for.

>
Why not make pirate copy DVDs ?
Like most small independant labels, our collection (your collection !) is a small structure and relies only on the sales of the DVDs to survive and develop the catalogue.

Every pirate copy reduces the funds that pay for the work of the musicians and the technicians involved on the projects.
Each DVD package represents thousands of working hours.
Thank you for taking this into consideration.

Good viewing and enjoy the music.
